Test Kitchen - Toast; Sweet Toppings

By: Minda, Posted: 6/16/2023

Break away from the traditional butter and jam on your toast. In this weeks Test Kitchen – Toast; Sweet Toppings we tried some new combinations and came out with our new favorite toast combo.

Test Kitchen - Toast

Our Test Kitchen - Toast; Sweet Toppings

Growing up, toast was always made with butter and jam. Then some genius came up with avocado toast and a whole world of possibilities opened up to us. So Mike and I decided to come up with some alternate toast combinations. We had so many combinations we decided to divide them into two categories. We have toast toppings with more sweet, dessert like toppings and we have toast toppings that are more savory.

In this round we will focus on sweeter toppings. Armed with a brand-new loaf of our favorite sourdough bread, a basket of strawberries, and an assortment of spreads and toppings we set out to taste test some different toast toppings.

Test Kitchen Deviled Eggs, Part 1: Deviled eggs are the perfect thing to bring for potluck or BBQ, but why keep with just the traditional flavors. We tried different flavor combinations to come up with our new favorite.

Test Kitchen – Baked Potatoes: Baked potatoes loaded with tons of topping are so good. Explore different baked potato toppings with us as we search for our new favorite combo.

Fruit and Cottage Cheese Toast

Fruit & Cottage Cheese Toast

Test Kitchen Score:
2.75/5

This was our first toast topping idea when we came up with the concept of trying different toast combos. Strawberries and Mango are one of my favorite combos and I was really hoping this one would be my new favorite way to dress up my breakfast toast…boy was I wrong. This recipe included: Sourdough Toast, Sliced Mango, Sliced Strawberries, and Honey Drizzle.

Feedback:

  • Nice fruit combo. Needs a different type of bread. Maybe wheat or multigrain.
  • Very Messy. If the bread was toasted more it would hold together better.

Marshmallow and Strawberry Toast

Marshmallow and Strawberry Toast with Chocolate Drizzle

Test Kitchen Score:
3.25/5

My new favorite ingredient to play with is Marshmallow Fluff. Mix it up with some Cream Cheese to give it some zip and add some sliced Strawberries. This should have been so good and I think it would have been if we had a different type of bread. It was at this point we learned sourdough bread does not complement everything as we thought it would. This recipe included: Sourdough Toast, Marshmallow Fluff, Cream Cheese, Sliced Strawberries, and Chocolate Drizzle.

Feedback:

  • Topping tastes good!
  • Needs a different bread. Maybe a white bread would be better.
Cannoli Topping Toast

Cannoli Topping Toast

Test Kitchen Score:
4.5/5

In brainstorming toast topping ideas, I went to bed one night dreaming about toast. For some reason cannoli kept popping up in my head. So, this is my cannoli inspired toast. This recipe included: Sourdough Toast, Marshmallow Fluff, Cream Cheese, Chocolate Chips, Pecans, Chocolate and Caramel Drizzle.

Feedback:

  • Little sweet but would be great with coffee or tea.
  • Love it! Nice texture with the chocolate chips.
Peanut Butter and Strawberry Toast

Test Kitchen Score:
5/5

This toast was a hodgepodge toast of ingredients we had left over. My mom was not looking forward to tasting this one. There was no way it was going to taste good at all. Turns out, we absolutely loved this one! This recipe included: Sourdough Toast, Peanut Butter, Strawberries, Marshmallow Fluff, and Cream Cheese.

Feedback:

  • Damn good!
  • Love the marshmallow drizzle!
**This combination beat all the other combinations we attempted this day and we had to feature this one on our Kick’n Kitchen Breakfast page. Check out the full recipe below.**

Test Kitchen - Toast; Sweet Toppings *Winner*

Peanut Butter and Strawberry Toast

What we Learned...

  • Sourdough bread does not always make the best base for making toast with different toppings. We should have mixed things up with some white or rye bread for a better outcome.

  • Texture is key. One of the reasons I liked the cannoli toast was the added texture from the chocolate chips. Texture also makes a huge difference when it came to the toastiness of our toast. In order to get the right texture on our bread we increased the timer on our toast and made sure it had a nice crunchy bite to it.
