Our Flavorful Boiled Chicken Breast

Boiled chicken is perfect for soups and stews, burritos or enchiladas, sandwiches, and salads. It’s so versatile, we love using it in our cooking. Boiled chicken sounds straightforward, I mean it literally tells you how to make it in the name. But the key to good boiled chicken is to flavor it. How do we make sure to have well flavored boiled chicken? We use lots of veggies, herbs, and seasonings to flavor our water used to boil the chicken.

Ingredients, Substitutions, and Additions

Chicken – Minda and I love chicken breast. We use it all the time. It is perfect for boiling. It holds up great and goes perfectly in any meal.

Veggies – When choosing veggies use what you like. Minda and I usually stick with the basic onion, celery, carrot, and garlic mixture. Mix it up if you want. Try and add peppers for additional flavor.

Herbs/Seasonings – Herbs and spices are the best way to help impart flavor into our Flavored Chicken Breast. We use anything and everything. Rosemary, thyme, salt, peppercorns are a must. We also like putting oregano, chili flakes, and bay leaves.

Note: Minda and I use kosher salt, but table salt also works. Make sure to adjust. Table salt is more dense than kosher salt therefore you will not need as much as if you were using Kosher salt.

Ingredients for Flavorful Boiled Chicken Breast

  •  5 lbs Chicken Breast
  • 1 large Onion
  • 2 large Carrots
  • 3 Celery Stalks
  • 5 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tbs Rosemary
  • 1 tbs Thyme
  • 1 tbs Kosher Salt
  • 1 tbs Peppercorns
  • 4 quarts Water

Directions

Flavorful Boiled Chicken Breast

Prep veggies, chicken, and seasonings: Wash and dry Celery (3 stalks) and Carrots (2 carrots). Peel onions (1 onion) and garlic (5 cloves). Chop carrots, celery, and onions into 2-inch pieces. Smash each clove of garlic. Measure seasonings (1 tablespoon rosemary, 1 tablespoon thyme, 1 tablespoon salt, and 1 tablespoon peppercorns) and place in small bowl. Trim any excess fat and skin off of chicken breasts (5 pounds).

Add ingredients for Flavorful Boiled Chicken Breast to pot and boil

Add all ingredients to large pot and boil: Pour Water (4 quarts) into a large pot. Stir in all prepared ingredients and bring to a boil. Boil for 20 minutes. Reduce heat and simmer for an additional 40 minutes. Chicken is fully cooked at 165°.

Ready to eat Flavorful Boiled Chicken Breast

Remove chicken and shred: Remove pot from heat and place chicken into a large bowl. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes or until cool enough to handle. Shred chicken and use as desired.
