Our Italian Pizza Sliders

For many years it has been a tradition in our family to serve a 6 foot sub for the whole family to enjoy on big game Sunday. Half was an Italian sub and the other half was turkey. This year we are mixing it up a bit, partly because the sandwich shops stopped selling the 6 foot sandwich and partly because our drive time to town has been tripled. So what to serve for the big game? Pizza? Subs? How about both? We decided on an Italian Pizza Slider, half pizza and half Italian sub. This combination of pepperoni, ham, salami, and lots of melty cheese satisfies just about every craving you could have.

Ingredients, Substitutions, and Additions

Meats – An Italian sub is made with pepperoni, salami, and ham. We went fancy for this one and splurged at the deli for thinly sliced cuts of each. We do like to put a lot of meat on our Italian Pizza Sliders. When we go to the deli counter, we have them cut into half a pound of each pepperoni, salami, and ham. Mike and I found out you can have the meat cut too thin but do what you like.

Buns – We found some brioche slider buns at our grocery store. They have been the perfect complement for these Italian Pizza Sliders as well as our Popcorn Chicken Sliders, and our Easy BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders. Any slider bun is fine just make sure that it has the ability to hold up to the pizza sauce.

Cheese – To get the full pizza effect we are going for we want super melty cheese. Havarti is perfect for our Italian Pizza Sliders, but mozzarella and creamy baby Swiss are also a great.

Pizza Sauce – Mike and I always have pizza sauce on hand, and it is a must for our Italian Pizza Sliders. We use pizza sauce instead of mayo and mustard. Try and put some of the extra pizza sauce into a small bowl and use it as a dip. If you don’t have any pizza sauce on hand marinara works a great substitution.

Topping – Top your sliders off with melted butter, parmesan, and garlic for an amazing flavor both inside and out of the slider. If you want to be fancy, sprinkle a little dried parsley on top of your melted butter mixture.
