Our Test Kitchen - Baked Potatoes

Did you know baked potatoes are not just limited to butter, salt, and pepper? It’s true. You can put anything you want on top of your baked potato. This wasn’t something I realized until I was in my twenties and at a restaurant that had a whole page dedicated to different baked potato toppings. Instantly, my mind was blown! Now it’s time for Mike and I to Test Kitchen our own ideas for baked potatoes.

Baked potatoes are a huge staple dinner in our house. They are easy to make, fill you up, and easy on the budget. Up until now we have stuck with a classic loaded potato. A little cheese, bacon, and sour cream is just enough to dress up a baked potato and turn it from dry to yummy! But let’s see what we can do to step outside the box and incorporate some different flavors.

Find some inspiration by checking out our other test kitchen ideas...

Test Kitchen – Deviled Eggs; Part 1: Deviled eggs are the perfect thing to bring for potluck or BBQ, but why keep with just the traditional flavors. We tried different flavor combinations to come up with our new favorite.

Test Kitchen – Toast; Sweet Toppings: Break away from the traditional butter and jam on your toast. We tried some sweet combinations and came out with our new favorite toast combo.

Loaded Baked Potato

Classic Loaded Baked Potato

Test Kitchen Score:
4/5

First up is our Classic Loaded Baked Potato to have something to compare the other
potatoes to. Although classic, our potato is just as flavorful and yummy as the
others. This recipe included: Butter, Salt, Pepper, Cheese, Bacon, and Sour
Cream.

Feedback:

  • Would have been a five if it had French Fried Onions on top.
  • Good, but I like mine a little more bougie. I need diced grilled onions, hot sauce, and French Fried Onions.

Baked Sloppy Joe Potato

Baked Sloppy Joe Potato

Test Kitchen Score:
4.75/5

Next up is our Baked Sloppy Joe Potato. Mike and I were brainstorming ideas for our Baked Potatoes and this one popped into my head. I was SO EXCITED to try this one. Although we don’t have Sloppy Joe’s very often, an open faced Sloppy Joe with melted cheese on top is one of my favorite things for dinner. It did take a little extra prep work to cook the meat but to me it was well worth it. This recipe included: Ground beef, Sloppy Joe Sauce, Shredded Cheese, and French Fried Onions.

Feedback:

  • OMG! This is so good!
  • Very good but needs an extra can of Sloppy Joe Sauce.
  • I like it but needs more sauce.

**I loved this recipe so much, I broke my own rules and posted this on our Kick’n Kitchen page even though it didn’t score the highest. Check out the full recipe here.**

Fajita Veggie Baked Potato

Fajita Veggie Baked potato

Test Kitchen Score:
5/5

Finally we have our Fajita Veggie Baked potato. This was another one of our out of the box ideas. Honestly, I never would have thought to make a fajita style baked potato but this was so good. The combination of fajita veggies and cheese went incredibly well with the baked potato and turned out to be our favorite of the three potatoes we tried. This recipe included: Bell Pepper, Onions, Shredded Cheese, and Sour Cream.

Feedback:

  • Mmm, why haven’t we had this before? Love the onions and peppers.
  • Oh, I like this!
  • Fantastic! The sweetness of the onions and peppers make this one great!

What we Learned...

  • Texture – We all like the added crunch from French Fried Onions. We need to explore alternative toppings that will add that crunch we are looking for.

  • Style – All the baked potatoes we made had a more savory side to them. We would like to explore other flavors. Maybe something sweet or tangy might be something fun to try.
