Minda and I both enjoy going out to dinner from time to time, but when we do it seems whenever I order steak it never turns out the way I want it. It always happens. Minda always tells me not to order the steak and I always say, “No, it will be good this time.” But it’s not. Either it’s cooked too well for my liking or so rare that I can’t eat it. About one in ten times I get lucky and the steak is cooked how I wanted it. Now, when I want my steak cooked just to my liking, I make it at home. Want to learn how to make the perfect medium steak? Ingredients, Substitutions, Suggestions, and Additions

Steak Doneness – Steak can be enjoyed at any doneness. Doneness refers to rare, medium rare, medium, medium well, and well done. Using a meat thermometer is the best way to check doneness.

  • Rare: (lots of red, cool in the center, very tender) – 120 to 130 degrees
  • Medium Rare: (pinkish/red, cool in the center, tender) – 130 to 140 degrees
  • Medium: (pink, warm center, tender) – 140 to 145 degrees.
  • Medium Well: (little pink, warm center, tender) – 145 to 150 degrees
  • Well Done: (no pink, hot center, tough) – 160 degrees and above.
 

Marinades – To add additional flavor use your favorite steak marinade. I like to marinate steak in a mixture of garlic, oil, soy sauce, and sriracha.

Dry Seasonings – Salt and pepper are the simplest seasonings for adding flavor before cooking steak. Try and add some garlic and onion powder for an additional kick.

Toppings – Add some sauteed onions or mushrooms on top of your steak to add extra body. Adding a good garlic herb butter atop your steak will enhance the flavor of your already amazing steak.

Pairings – Steak is not complete without a baked potato and a side of veggies.

The Perfect Medium Steak

Ingredients

  • 4 1-inch Steaks
  • 2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Pepper

Directions for The Perfect Medium Steak

Put the steak on a plate and pat dry with paper towels. Evenly sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of each steak. Let rest at room temperature for 15 minutes. While the steak is resting turn on your grill and bring it up to 450 degrees.

For a medium steak place directly over the heat source and grill for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip and cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes. Use a meat thermometer to ensure the steak reaches an internal temperature of 140 degrees then pull from grill and let rest for five minutes. Now plate and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 4 1-inch Steaks

  • 2 tsp Salt

  • 2 tsp Pepper

Directions

  • Place steak on a plate and pat dry with paper towels.
