Ingredients, Substitutions, and Additions

Protein – Ribeye is traditional for a Philly Cheesesteak. Try a chicken Philly with some boneless skinless chicken thigh.

Dry Seasonings – Add some thyme and rosemary while cooking your London broil. For extra spice, add some red pepper flakes.

Fresh Veggies – Try some red bell pepper. It will give a sweeter bite. Mushrooms will give you extra body. If you like spicy dice up some jalapeno or serrano when sautéing the bell pepper.

Cheese – Havarti is a creamy cheese that we like in our Philly. If spiciness is needed, try a pepper jack.

Pairing – Enjoy your Philly Cheesesteak with a side of chips or fries. Potato or macaroni salad are also a great side. Maybe pop open your favorite beer and enjoy.

Philly Cheesesteak

Ingredients for Philly Cheesesteak

  • 2 lbs London Broil
  • 2 Large Onions
  • 2 Green Bell Pepper
  • 2 tbs Olive Oil
  • 1 tbs Garlic Powder
  • 1 tbs Onion Powder
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • ½ tsp Salt
  • 2 Baguettes
  • 4 tbs butter
  • 6 slices Provolone Cheese
  • 1 pkg Au Jus Concentrate, optional

Directions

Prepping London Broil, Veggies, and Baguettes

Put the London broil into the freezer to firm for 15 minutes. During this time cut the onion and bell pepper into ¼ inch slices and place into separate bowls. Mix the dry seasonings and place in a small bowl. Cut the baguettes into thirds. Butter the baguettes, place on a cookie sheet, and set aside. Remove the London broil from the freezer and cut into ¼ inch slices.

Philly Cheesesteak Cooking and Assembly

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. While the oven is preheating, heat a large pan to medium/high and add 1 tbs olive oil. When the oil begins to ripple, add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the bell pepper and sauté for an additional 10 minutes while occasionally stirring to prevent burning. Remove onion and bell pepper from the pan and place in a bowl.

In the same pan, add the remaining olive oil, London broil, and dry seasoning then cook for 10 to 15 minutes or until browned. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.

Place buttered baguettes in oven for 5 to 7 minutes or until toasted to personal preference. Remove from oven, and layer equal amounts of London broil and veggies on each baguette. Place provolone cheese on top and return to oven for 5 additional minutes. If needed, switch oven to broil to melt the cheese a bit more. Check regularly to prevent burning. Pull from the oven plate alongside the Au Jus and enjoy.

Optional: Au Jus is not typically served with a cheesesteak, however, it’s a nice addition to this meal. In a small pot, follow the instructions on the Au Jus concentrate packet. When finished, transfer equally into 6 small bowls for dipping.
