Homemade Dinner Rolls

Our Homemade Dinner Rolls

There is nothing I love more than Homemade Dinner Rolls at our Holiday Feast. Since childhood I’ve had a habit of taking my dinner and making a sandwich out of it with my dinner rolls. Apparently, I can’t eat my holiday meal like a normal person. Because of this, I’ve made sure we have dinner rolls at every Holiday Feast.

One year, I waited a little too late to buy our dinner rolls from the store and we were stuck with the pitiful ones that nobody wanted. To ensure this does not happen again I’ve made it my mission to create our own Homemade Dinner Rolls. 

These Homemade Dinner Rolls have a great flavor and are fairly easy to make. You could even make them the night before and refrigerate the unbaked rolls overnight so you don’t have to worry about making them the day of your feast. 

Ingredients, Substitutions, and Additions

Flour – I wanted to make sure this recipe was as easy as possible. That means no fancy flour. This recipe works just fine with All-Purpose Flour. 

Sweetener – I am not a huge fan of a sweet dinner roll, don’t get me wrong they do have their time and place, but for our Homemade Dinner Rolls not so much. To make them semi better for us I cut the sugar in half and substitute some Honey. This also helps add a little extra to the flavor of our rolls. 

Yeast – We will use one packet of Active Dry Yeast. The temperature we need to activate this yeast is between 100°-110°F, this will be important later on. 

Milk – For our liquid, I like to use whole milk and made sure to test this with our lactose free milk and it worked just fine. 

Butter – There are several ways to add our softened butter to our dough. I like to add it in after a couple minutes of kneading. It gets sloppy and it’s a real “trust the process” kind of thing but it’s worth it. 

Egg – We need one egg for this recipe and it should be at room temperature.

Homemade Dinner Rolls

Ingredients for Homemade Dinner Rolls

  • 1 3/4 cup Milk
  • 2 tbs Honey
  • 1 pkt Active Dry Yeast
  • 1 Egg, beaten and at room temperature
  • 4 cups Flour
  • 2 tbs Sugar
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 3 tbs Butter, softened (plus extra to butter the top of the rolls with)

Directions

Prepare Dough

Either in the microwave or on the stove top, warm Milk and Honey to 110°. Stir in Yeast packet and let sit until foamy, about 10-15 minutes. 

Combine Flour, Sugar, and Salt in a large mixing bowl and set aside until Yeast has foamed. 

When Yeast is ready, add in one beaten Egg and stir. Pour mixture into Flour bowl and stir using your hands until everything is combined. 

Knead dough for three minutes. Shape dough into a ball, slightly flattened, on top and place Butter on top of the dough. Use your fingers to squeeze and knead the butter into the dough.

Continue kneading the dough until it is smooth, about 15-20 minutes. 

First Rise and Form Dough

Place smooth dough into a large greased bowl and cover with a tea towel. Allow dough to raise until double in size.  To expedite the raise place bowl into and oven or microwave with three cups of boiling water. Dough should be doubled in about 45 minutes.

Punch down dough and using a scale, divided dough into 12 equal pieces. 

One by one, shape dough into balls and place in a 9×13 inch greased baking dish. 

Second Rise and Bake

If baking same day, cover dish with a tea towel and allow to raise until rolls have doubled in size, about 45 minutes. If you are refrigerating rolls overnight, spray plastic wrap with cooking spray and cover dish securely.

Cover baking dish with aluminum foil and bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Remove foil, butter the tops of the rolls and bake an additional 15 minutes. Serve and Enjoy!
