Our Beef Stew
What’s your favorite go-to dinner on a cold wintery day? Ours is Beef Stew. There’s just something about a hearty beef stew that satisfies every time. The aroma and rich flavor brings you back to childhood. Playing in the rain and getting yelled at to come inside and wash up for dinner. As a bonus, this is the perfect one pot meal for easy cleanup.
Ingredients, Substitutions, and Additions
Stew Meat – What kind of meat should you use? Any precut soup or stew meat available at our local grocery store will work and cuts down on your prep time. If you want to customize the cut to your liking we recommend a chuck roast.
Veggies and Herbs – When it comes to our stew we like to use whole carrots and celery and cut them into 1 to 2 inch pieces. Instead of whole carrots try using baby carrots. This will save time when it comes to prep.
Potatoes – Potatoes are a must in any stew. Now any kind of potato will do, however, we want to keep in mind some potatoes will hold up better in a stew than others. For example, a russet potato can breakdown as your stew simmers while a Yukon Gold potato will keep its’ texture, offer variety, and can just be thrown into the pot as is.
Veggie Size – Now for your veggies…carrots, celery, and yellow onion add to the flavor while still keeping things simple. When it comes to chopping vegetables, we like to keep our veggies a little bit bigger than most. Around 1-2 inch chunks makes a nice hearty stew.
Mushrooms – If you want, during the last 30 minutes of cooking add some fresh mushrooms.
Herbs – Sometimes we will add some fresh rosemary, thyme and sage in a tied up portion of cheese cloth to enhance the flavor of the broth.
Preferred Pairings
Our Beef Stew is perfect just on it’s own. However, there are some extras that go perfectly.
Bread – Sounds simple but some sliced French or Sourdough bread with a little butter is perfect for dipping in your stew.
White Rice – With rice is the only way Minda will eat Beef Stew. A little bit of white rice in the bottom of the bowl topped with some stew and it’s gone in seconds.
Ingredients
- 2.5 lbs Stew Meat
- 2-3 lbs Potatoes
- 1 lbs Carrots
- 6-8 Celery Stalks
- 2 Large Yellow Onions
- 4 Cloves Garlic
- 10 Cups Beef Broth
- 2 Beef Stew Seasoning Packets
- 1 tbs Tomato Paste
- 2 tbs Olive Oil
- 2 Whole Bay Leaves
- 1 tsp Onion Powder
- 1 tsp Garlic Powder
- 1 tsp Oregano
- 1 tsp Thyme
- 1 tsp Rosemary
Directions
Bring a large pot to medium high heat and add oil. Once the oil begins to ripple add stew meat. When the stew meat starts to brown add dry seasonings, stew packets, garlic and tomato paste. Cook an additional 2 to 3 minutes while continually stirring to prevent burning of the seasonings.
Pour just enough beef broth to completely cover the stew meat. Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Add potatoes, carrots, celery, onion and bay leaves. Pour the remaining beef broth into the pot covering all the veggies. Increase heat to medium high and bring stew to a boil while frequently stirring.
When the stew begins to boil reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 to 4 hours. Make sure to stir your beef stew occasionally to prevent burning. After the beef stew has simmered, dish and enjoy.
